The Opportunity
The Department of Vision and Hearing Technology in the Faculty of Science & Technology is seeking a Coordinator for their Opticianry Diploma Program.

WHAT IT TAKES
Requirements for the role are:

    • a current License as an Optician/Contact Lens Fitter in good standing with the College of Opticians of British Columbia with certification in Automated Refraction;
    • experience teaching in clinical, classroom and/or laboratory settings in an Opticianry related program or equivalent;
    • at least five years of broad and current clinical experience that includes a sound foundation in Opticianry;
    • curriculum development/maintenance experience/expertise;
    • effective interpersonal skills, initiative and creativity;
    • self-directedness and strong work ethic;
    • ability to collaborate and contribute effectively to team activities;
    • demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and to work independently on projects; and
    • strong verbal and written communication skills.

The primary functions of the Opticianry Program Coordinator are to:

    • To coordinate all aspects of the OPTI Program administrative (admissions and graduating) requirements.
    • To support selection of qualified faculty and staff to deliver courses in the program and to provide administrative support to these faculty and staff.
    • To promote the OPTI Program in the community in order to recruit students.
    • To maintain and liaise with the OPTI Program Advisory Committee ( PAC ).
The job duties and tasks include:


    • Administration:

      • Admissions: read and follow-up on OPTI applications and reference letters; apply selection criteria to determine acceptance of applicants to the program.
      • Work with the Vision and Hearing Technologies ( VAHT ) Chair to support preparation of departmental capital budget requests.
      • Prepare and monitor the OPTI operating budget, authorizing honoraria and purchases of supplies within that budget in order to support program course offerings.
      • Schedule OPTI courses and exams as needed.
      • Order textbooks for OPTI courses in consultation with the faculty who will be teaching these courses.
      • Assign faculty to teach OPTI courses according to contractual obligations as defined in the Collective Agreement.
      • Ensure evaluations for faculty, staff and courses are conducted regularly and changes are initiated as required.
      • Ensure effective communication with the Dean and other College administrators, including submission of required reports on a timely basis.
      • Liaise with accrediting bodies to maintain program accreditation requirements, including preparation of accreditation reports.
      • Attend annual meetings or national and provincial accrediting and regulatory bodies as appropriate.
      • Other related duties and/or special studies as required by the Dean.

    • Marketing/Promotion:

      • Ensure that calendar copy, web site, program brochures and all other advertising material related to the OPTI program are kept accurate and up to date.
      • Work with the Marketing and Communications Office ( MCO ) to develop and distribute brochures and posters for promotion of the program.
      • Collaborate with the VAHT Chair and HEAR Coordinator on departmental marketing initiatives and promotion events.
      • Connect with appropriate members of the community to enhance and promote the program.
      • Ensure that faculty and staff in Science & Technology who engage in outreach activities are up-to-date on the program and have materials to distribute at their outreach sessions as appropriate.
      • Attend College Info sessions to promote the program, or arrange for other faculty or staff to attend the info sessions.
      • Respond to student queries (phone/email) about the program requirements and benefits.
      • Attend local conferences where appropriate to promote the program.

    • Student Support:

      • Respond to student queries about the program and its requirements.
      • Deal with questions and concerns from students in the program, and refer students to the Dean where necessary.
      • Organize and promote Alumni events.

    • Advisory Committee:

      • Organize regular meetings of the OPTI PAC in accordance with College Policy to report on program status and initiatives and solicit advice for program maintenance and improvement.
      • Communicate updates to the advisory committee as needed throughout the year.
      • Recruit new members to the advisory committee as needed.

    • Program support:

      • Ensure curriculum guidelines for courses are current and changes proceed through the governance process.
      • Update and make revisions to the program (including possible development of new courses) as needed to maintain currency and program accreditation.
Additional Information
The two-year Opticianry Diploma Program provides students with the experience and skills needed to become licensed Dispensing Opticians.

This limited-term faculty coordinator position will run from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026, with possible extension to July 31, 2028. The position carries a 2.5-section time release for the 25/26 academic year.
