WHAT IT TAKES
Requirements for the role are:
• A minimum of a DVM , or RVT with a minimum of a Master's degree in a relevant field, or an appropriate equivalent, from an accredited university
• Teaching experience at the college or university level
• Experience with curriculum development
• Strong interpersonal skills with students, staff, faculty
• Proven ability to problem solve day to day issues
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with faculty on Department wide issues
• Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter and to work independently on projects
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• To coordinate all aspects of the VTEC Program administrative (admissions, graduation and accreditation) requirements.
• To monitor student performance and connect students to College support services.
• To support selection of qualified faculty and staff to deliver courses in the program and to provide administrative support to these faculty and staff.
• To promote the VTEC Program in the community in order to recruit students.
• To maintain and liaise with the VTEC Program Advisory Committee ( PAC ).
• Administration:
• Admissions: review VTEC applications and apply selection criteria to score applicants and determine the order of seat offers to program applicants.
• Prepare and monitor the VTEC capital and operating budgets, authorizing honoraria and purchases of supplies within that budget in order to support program course offerings. Work with the VTEC Laboratory Supervisor as necessary in ensuring facility, equipment and supplies are maintained.
• Schedule VTEC courses as needed.
• Assign faculty to teach VTEC courses according to contractual obligations as defined in the Collective Agreement.
• Ensure evaluations for faculty, staff and courses are conducted regularly and changes are initiated as required.
• Represent VTEC at Faculty Education Committee and Dean's Advisory Committee ( FEC / DAC ) meetings.
• Ensure effective communication with the Dean and other College administrators, including submission of required reports on a timely basis.
• Maintain program accreditation with the CVMA . Including but not limited to:
• admission, course and program changes as required to accommodate accreditation requirements
• tracking essential skills completion for every VTEC graduate
• annual CVMA reports, comprehensive program review and program accreditation visits every 5 years
• Liaise with the Douglas College Animal Care committee to maintain animal welfare standards and ensure pedagogical merit for all live animal used within the program.
• Maintain facility accreditation with the CVBC . Including, but not limited to:
• Liaise with the Laboratory Supervisor to ensure the veterinary facility meets all facility standards within the approved scope of practice and as required by the College of Veterinarians of BC.
• Renew the CVBC facility licence of the VTEC veterinary hospital annually, submit annual reports to the CVBC , organize and run facility accreditation visits and respond to deficiencies in a timely manner.
• Ensure there is an assigned Designated Veterinarian responsible to the CVBC for all legal requirements of veterinary practice within the VTEC Hospital facility scope of practice.
• To liaise with the BC Veterinary Technology Association regarding the Veterinary Technology National Examination and VTEC graduate licensing requirements.
• Attend annual meetings of national and provincial accrediting and regulatory bodies as appropriate.
• Other related duties and/or special projects as required by the Dean.
• Marketing/Promotion:
• Ensure that the web site, program brochures and all other advertising material related to the VTEC program are kept accurate and up to date.
• Work with the Marketing and Communications Office ( MCO ) to develop and distribute brochures and posters for promotion of the program.
• Connect with appropriate members of the community to enhance and promote the program.
• Ensure that faculty and staff in Science & Technology who engage in outreach activities are up to date on the program and have materials to distribute at their outreach sessions as appropriate.
• Attend College Info sessions to promote the program or arrange for other faculty or staff to attend the info sessions.
• Respond to student queries (phone/email) about the program requirements and benefits.
• Attend local conferences where appropriate to promote the program.
• Student Support:
• Respond to applicant queries about the program and its requirements.
• Deal with questions and concerns from students in the program, facilitate student feedback and refer students to the Dean where necessary.
• Liaise with College support services such as the Library, Learning Centre, Counselling and Accessibility Services to ensure students are connected with applicable services as needed.
• Track failing students and coordinate with Faculty members to provide student support.
• Track attrition rates and facilitate student re-entry into the program when requested.
• Convene a VTEC awards committee and liaise with the Douglas College Foundation, Admissions and students to facilitate the VTEC graduation awards process.
• Liaise with the BCVTA and AAVSB regarding graduating students' eligibility to sit the VTNE and communicate VTNE requirements to students.
• Advisory Committee:
• Ensure regular meetings of the VTEC PAC in accordance with College Policy to report on program status and initiatives and to solicit advice for program maintenance and improvement.
• Communicate updates to the advisory committee as needed throughout the year.
• Assist with recruitment of new members to the advisory committee as needed.
• Program support:
• Ensure Program and Curriculum Guidelines for courses are current and changes proceed through the governance process.
• Organise and participate in regular program curriculum reviews (including possible program revisions and development of new courses) as needed to maintain currency and program accreditation.
• Ensure program standard operating procedures are reviewed at least every 5 years and updated as needed.
• Review equipment and facility needs, solicit equipment requests and submit budget requests for facility renovations and equipment.
• Liaise with the Douglas College Foundation to enable sponsorship of VTEC specific awards, scholarships and bursaries.
