Job Description
Duties:
The BSN Instructor/Simulation Lab Coordinator is responsible for the supervision and day-to-day operation of the nursing simulation lab in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services (HSHS). The Instructor/Coordinator is a member of the HSHS BSN Faculty; instructs a minimum of one BSN NURS credit course, participates in relevant curriculum, program, Faculty committee(s), works closely with instructors, program chairs, and staff, as well as with Facilities, IT personnel and Laerdal Medical (the provider of the Learning Management System and simulators for the Simulation Lab). This position reports to the HSHS Dean and Associate Dean.
- Prepare and maintain simulation equipment, media, computers and materials related to simulation learning for various health care settings;
- Collaborate with faculty and simulation specialists in designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating simulation education and lab activities, and curriculum materials to support student achievement of nursing program outcomes.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate simulation lab activities in accordance with program policies, course objectives and program outcomes.
- Serve as an expert resource and leader to faculty in developing simulation in the classroom and simulation lab.
- Promote a student-centered approach while providing client centered services to all stakeholders.
- Develop and incorporate evidence based best practices in the delivery of simulation teaching and learning experiences.
- Promote efficient and effective processes and procedures to meet HSHS faculty simulation needs.
The main responsibilities of the position are to:
- Coordinate operational and administrative functions to support the simulation lab, e.g., provide development and oversight of all record keeping, budgeting, invoicing, and accounting as required and in consultation with the equipment and supply clerks.
- Operationalize a wide variety of simulation experiences.
- Facilitate integration of Human Patient Simulation into the Health lab courses, using the available software and other created scenarios.
- Promote an optimal learning environment in all simulation areas for all participants and facilitators. For example: run simulation events as needed, provide assistance to students, faculty and simulation specialists using simulation and maintain safety standards with regard to the use of equipment and hazardous waste disposal.
- Establish practices and procedures for simulation and lab activities that provide for effective learning experiences and safe practice.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the simulation laboratory processes and make recommendations to the Dean/Associate Dean for improvement.
- Make recommendations for equipment maintenance and purchases to the Dean/Associate Dean in order to maintain standards essential for effective instruction to the Health Programs.
- Direct and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment to support all instruction in the laboratory.
- Provide direction for all support staff including student peer mentors for the nursing simulation lab.
- Assist with Faculty development, support, and guidance in simulation and other related innovative teaching/learning methods.
- Provide client centered service to all stakeholder groups and work with faculty and staff to provide seamless simulation learning experiences for students, e.g., may assist or assume responsibilities of others as needed, etc.
- With the ongoing support of Laerdal Medical, provide basic trouble shooting for simulators, program software to maintain correct physiological function, and provide ongoing maintenance.
- Support research related to simulation and other innovative teaching/learning.
- Work flexible hours and travel between satellite campuses as required.
- Participate in accreditation activities for programs using simulation.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's Degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years' teaching experience may be considered. Demonstrated proficiency in post-secondary teaching with the ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
Minimum three years current practice experience in nursing within different contexts of care. Expertise and practice experience must be in mental health, gerontology, or acute-medical/surgical care. Demonstrated ability to work with a dynamic and creative program team. Proficiency with the application and integration of information technology to teaching. Current practicing membership in good standing with the BCCNP.
Experience with, and knowledge of, Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
