About the Opportunity

Heiltsuk Tribal Council is looking for a full-time Housing Director based in Bella Bella, BC.

Reporting to the Housing Authority Committee and administratively to the CEO, you will play a pivotal role in developing a Housing Authority model to improve the housing situation within the community.

In this dynamic new position, you will be primarily responsible for improving housing within Bella Bella, focusing on both rental and private ownership housing.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing a strategic plan for the Housing department
  • Utilizing specific targeted funds to serve the Heiltsuk membership in an accessible, transparent, and accountable process
  • Researching funding opportunities to cover repairs and develop proposals for additional units
  • Implementing and enforcing housing policies and zoning by-laws
  • Creating a public database of private lots and homes for sale or rent
  • Developing a support system to encourage private home ownership
  • Mentoring the Housing Manager
  • Preparing budgets to maximize the utility of funding

About You

To qualify, you will need a diploma/degree in a relevant field, with 3-5+ years in project management in the housing industry. A valid driver's license is also required.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Knowledge of lands management and current housing systems in Bella Bella
  • Extensive understanding of housing issues, preferably within First Nations communities
  • Networking abilities to connect with CMHC and other relevant organizations
  • Strategic planning skills for developing and implementing housing strategies
  • Developed experience in tenant relations management and certification of possession
  • Experience in mortgage navigation to help community members meet requirements and obtain guarantees
  • Ability to develop policies and procedures that meet legal requirements
  • Confidence in handling housing and financial complexities
  • Proven track record in mentoring and upskilling staff
  • Leadership skills in housing projects including construction supervision and capital projects
  • Organizational skills to oversee financial operations with integrity and confidentiality

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong organizational and communication skills, along with the ability to mentor and lead team members. Your high level of integrity and accountability, combined with being detail-oriented and having strong analytical abilities, will make you succeed in this role. You will bring strong decision-making skills to handle tough housing-related decisions, and analytical and project management skills to enhance housing initiatives are also essential.

This is a critical role designed to enhance the housing conditions within the Heiltsuk community. We are looking for a dedicated and proactive individual who is passionate about community development and capable of driving significant improvements in both rental and private housing sectors.

About the Benefits

Compensation based on skills and experience, is a competitive annual salary of $95,000-$115,000, and a host of excellent benefits including:

  • Relocation assistance - up to $5,000 for moving expenses, plus an additional $5,000 if tenure is successful for departing moving costs
