Job Summary

The Team
Arrow Fire Zone is hiring for two separate Unit Crew Supervisor positions, 1 each for the Valhalla and Sentinel Unit Crews. As the leader of the Sentinel or Valhalla Unit Crew you'll join a well-established, cohesive group that values each member's unique background and experiences. Both unit crews, made up of 22 professionals including a supervisor, assistant supervisor, crew leaders, and crew members, have individual traits and unique histories that have evolved over 20+ years in service. You'll collaborate with various BCWS officers, crews and specialists while contributing to vital provincial preparedness and response efforts. The demanding role requires strong leadership to maintain a balance between effective work and ensuring the team's well-being during longer, more demanding seasons.

The Role
The Fire Crew Supervisor role involves leading and developing a team of 22 individuals, balancing administrative duties and fieldwork in fire preparedness and response. It requires strong organizational, communication, and workforce planning skills to maintain efficiency. The position includes diverse responsibilities, both on and off the fire line, within the Arrow Zone of West Kootenay, British Columbia. The work is demanding and offers opportunities to address challenges, find solutions, and see the direct impact of decisions, making it suitable for individuals who want to take on leadership roles in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Grade 12 plus 4 seasons forest fire related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; AND
  • Minimum 2 seasons of supervisory experience; AND
  • Valid OFA Level 1 with Transportation Endorsement; AND
  • Successful completion of pre-employment fitness standard; AND
  • Maintain personal weights standards as required for crew type
  • Valid Class 5 driver licence


Preference may give given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Incident Commander 4or higher certification
  • Strike Team Leader
  • Task Force Leader or Task Force Leader trainee certification
  • Qualified Faller Assessor, Qualified Faller Trainer, Certified Faller or Faller in Training or industry equivalent


Provisos /Willingness statement(s)
  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures
  • To keep current on emerging issues
  • To take in-house training and certification as required
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions
  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for crew positions to meet operational requirements
