Job Summary

The Team
Our dedicated group of 11 professionals in the Thompson Cariboo Region works to conserve, protect, and promote recreation and indigenous values within BC's stunning protected areas. You'll collaborate with a dynamic mix of colleagues, including area supervisors, park rangers, conservation specialists, and community liaison officers, all committed to ensuring that conservation and recreation coexist harmoniously, benefiting the environment and enriching the lives of the public.

The Role
As a Recreation Services Officer, you will be at the forefront of managing long-term park operations contracts across the Cariboo, ensuring clean, safe, and enjoyable recreational experiences for the public. This role offers high visibility and interaction with campers and visitors, providing opportunities to shape and enhance our recreation services. You'll work closely with a diverse group of BC Parks staff, stakeholders, and First Nations communities, fostering meaningful connections and supporting indigenous interests in traditional territories.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Resource Management, Natural Resource Management, Parks Management, Business with focus on project and/or contract management in the Natural Resource Sector (e.g. business administration, public administration) or related degree (e.g., geography, environmental studies) and two (2) years of related experience; OR
  • Two (2) year technical diploma in Resource Management, Natural Resource Management, Parks Management, Business with focus on project and/or contract management in the Natural Resource Sector (e.g. business administration, public administration) or related degree (e.g., geography, environmental studies), or related diploma and four (4) years of directly related experience,
  • Must possess and maintain a Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.

Related experience must include all of the following:
  • Experience in negotiating financial terms and conditions for contracts
  • Experience managing contractors including contract inspection and monitoring and dispute resolution.
  • Contract management experience including procurement for services or assets, and contract agreement writing.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Park management experience (includes development and maintenance of recreation facilities, operation of facilities, management of public and private sector recreation services, and employee and public safety and security).
  • Natural Resource management experience (includes wildlife or vegetation management programs, resource inventory and research, environmental impact assessment, resource use regulations, resource protection, non-conforming use management, First Nations agreements).
  • Experience managing part or all of a project, including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and completion

Willingness statements:
  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain Park Ranger designation under the Park Act and comply with BC Parks' uniform policy. AND
  • Must be willing and able to travel, sometimes extensively both within and outside the region and in remote areas for multiple days, by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, in camp conditions and in all weather.

Mandatory Training & Certification:
  • Current and WorkSafe BC recognized Occupational First Aid Level 1, 2 or 3 Certificate.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License or equivalent from another Canadian Province (a BC Class 7L/7N, or other learner's permit, are not considered equivalent).
  • Completion of BC Parks Law and Its Administration (BCIT PRKS 1010 or 0010 course). Note: if you have already successfully completed the BCIT PRKS 3110/3120 courses, BCIT course 1010 is not required. Successful candidates will have up to 3 months from date of hire to successfully complete this course. If required, work time will be provided to complete the course and course costs will be reimbursed upon successful completion. This course is referred to as PRKS 1010 - BC Parks Law and Its Administration and can be obtained through the BC Institute of Technology (BCIT).   • Maintains a current Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence. Note: If required, work time will be provided to complete the course and course costs will be reimbursed upon successful completion.
  • Possesses a Pleasure Craft Operator Card issued by Transport Canada. Note: If required, work time will be provided to complete the course and course costs will be reimbursed upon successful completion.
  • Successful candidates will be required to attend a Provincial training bootcamp at Manning Park in April and May.
