Teck is looking for an experienced Building/Stores Technician, TST (Temporary - 12 months) to join our team at our Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Initially reporting to the Section Leader, Administration & Operations Support, the Building/Stores Technician is a member of the Technical Services, Trail (TST) Support Group. The Building/Stores Technician maintains, the Technical Services, Trail (TST) building and equipment utilizing Teck personnel or contractors. Instruct TST personnel in safety regulations. Order, maintain and assist in the selection of supplies and equipment for the TST groups and stores area. Provide technical assistance to TST personnel with respect to industrial hygiene sampling and new chemical reviews.

This role is based in the welcoming community of Trail, situated in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Here you will find outdoor adventure at your fingertips! Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Plan work for minor projects up to $50000, based on TST technical project needs or expenditures; develop and manage scope of projects
  • Owner Rep for contracted work for the TST business area, ensure all contracting requirements are upheld. Coordinate contractor purchase orders through CMS workbench, submit onsite contractor notification, approve timesheets, conduct work package hazard checklist meetings, and track contractor hours for TST monthly safety statistics report to corporate
  • Prioritize maintenance of the TST building. Work with Trail Ops personnel or Contractors to ensure all aspects of TST building projects are managed within TST standards
  • Safety Officer and Station Warden for TST; arrange or give instructional talks to TST personnel on safety standards, lock-out procedures and specific hazards ensures relevant safety supplies are in stores. Develop and/or contribute to TST Standard Operating Procedures for safety and/or administrative processes
  • Provide TST with hygiene services (area and personal monitoring);, consult with Trail Operations hygiene department as required; perform annual and other required testing of LEV devices and fume hoods, coordinate calibration of TST safety devices; perform respirator fit tests for TST employees
  • Evaluate all new WHMIS regulated substances ordered for TST in compliance with Trail Operations' chemical approval program; administrator of the Chemical Change Request (CCR) permit process on EtQ; Act as hygiene and environmental representative for new chemical approvals. Liaising with contracted Occupational Hygienist. Manage Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and Smelter Material Treatment Requests (SMTs) for TST business unit. Administrator of the Verisk SDS database for TST
  • Troubleshoot and modify procedures and equipment used for laboratory, micro plant and pilot plant process simulations; use various types of laboratory and pilot scale equipment in the course of a test program. Collect and record raw experimental data and observations; summarize and prepare test reports of these finding for use in the preparation of formal reports and the engineering of the processes being examined

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a recognized Institute of Technology or University in metallurgical or chemical sciences with more than 5 years of relevant work experience. Chemistry background is an asset.
  • Good understanding of the TST Health and Safety policies, procedures and systems
  • Mechanical aptitude to assist in the construction, assembly and maintenance of lab, pilot plant and equipment.Good understanding of TST technical project management practices
  • Good listening, verbal and written communication skills, to direct contractors and liaise with trades, suppliers and TST personnel
  • Experience with project management, contracting, scheduling and cost control
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with the JDE purchasing, finance and maintenance order systems and a working knowledge of shipping, receiving and warehouse
  • Possess computer skills, including familiarity with MS Office and Project software
  • Appropriate Transportation of Dangerous Goods experience
  • Team player with good communication skills is essential
