The Researcher - Fire Ecologist position is a research scientist and scientific advisor in the field of ecosystem-based management with a focus on natural resource management in the Cariboo region. The Researcher - Fire Ecologist will primarily focus on developing an understanding of fire effects at the stand level to inform forestry practices including, restoration after wildfire, fuel reduction treatments, stand resiliency, and cultural and prescribed fire projects using experimentation and modelling. A critical task of this position will be to derive evidence on how prescribed and cultural fire contribute to resilient stands and ecosystems. They will also conduct applied research using ecological theory to support science-based decision-making and provide expert professional advice relating to ecology, fire, climate change, disturbance, and ecological resiliency. Key initiatives this position will support are Legal and Regulatory updates (e.g. Forest & Range Practices Act updates - Forest Landscape Planning), Wildfire Recovery, Wildfire Risk Reduction, Cultural and Prescribed Fire, Dry Interior Douglas-fir management, and foster relationships with internal and external partners.

Job Requirements:
  • Registered, or immediately eligible to register, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Completion of Thesis-based M.Sc. in Biological Sciences, specializing in Fire Ecology, Disturbance Ecology, Community Ecology, Ecosystem Ecology or Applied Ecology and 2 years experience; OR
  • Completion of Thesis-based Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, specializing in Fire Ecology, Disturbance Ecology, Community Ecology, Ecosystem Ecology or Applied Ecology and 1 year experience.
  • Bachelor of Biology, Forestry or Natural Resource Management Degree with equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience leading project design and delivery, complex analyses and reporting, and providing advice within a regulatory regime.
  • Experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.
  • Advanced knowledge of ecology related to fire, and other disturbance agents that drive ecosystem dynamics.

If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).
