Job Summary

The Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Branch (EMAB) is a key program area within the Environmental Protection Division (EPD). The branch manages and coordinates the acquisition, publication and application of data analytics and science-based knowledge, including the provision of lab services. The branch supports the management and stewardship of the natural resource sector through ambient monitoring data production, development of scientific/technical standards and guidelines and through the provision of expert environment and climate change advice and support. The Branch advances the use and application of relevant knowledge and best practices and achieves its objectives through partnerships and shared stewardship with Indigenous Nations, partners, stakeholders, and communities. Work is guided by BC's water legislation and regulations.

This position provides provincial-level expertise in the field of biological monitoring and aquatic ecology and expert advice that directly informs natural resource development decisions affecting water quality and ecosystem health. Responsibilities include the continued development and co-ordination of the provincial benthic invertebrate biomonitoring program.

Job Requirements:
  • Registered, or immediately eligible to register, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Post-graduate degree in biological sciences or equivalent and six (6) months related experience; OR,
  • Master's degree in biological sciences or equivalent with two (2) years of related experience; OR,
  • Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences or equivalent with four (4) years related experience.
  • Valid B.C. driver's licence


Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:
  • Advanced experience in scientific data analysis (including statistical techniques) and interpretation.
  • Experience assessing the quality and condition of aquatic ecosystems, with an emphasis on freshwater environments, including the biological and water quality components.
  • Experience communicating scientific information, including writing technical reports and making oral presentations.
  • Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation, regulations and policies.
  • Supervisory and people leadership experience including planning, organizing, and overseeing the work of field-based water quality monitoring staff, consultants and professionals.
  • Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) field certification and experience conducting biomonitoring.
  • Experience with small/medium motor-boat operations (12 - 22' boat sizes), trailer hauling and boat maintenance.

  • Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
  • May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
