Position Summary
Do you have a passion for nursing? We have the position for you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC).

Reporting to the Director of patient Care Services, and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, guides the care for elderly Geriatric Day Hospital clients, within a client/family centered model of care, coordinates outpatient and inpatient geriatric services. Acts as a clinical resource for nurses and other health care providers in the hospital and community to assist with planning care for elderly clients. Shares knowledge and expertise with colleagues via consultations, in-services and presentations.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days - 08:00 to 16:00

University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) is the largest Acute Care facility within the Northern Health region, and a hub for specialized health services. It's also a teaching hospital:
• Provides undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia.
• Hosts residents in UBC's Family Practice Residency Program
• Is a key clinical education site for nursing and many health sciences students at UNBC, the College of New Caledonia, BCIT and other institutions.
UHNBC has benefited from nearly $100 million in expansions, renovations and new equipment since 2001:
• Patient care addition with an expanded emergency room and updated ICU
• State-of-the-art maternal-child care centre (including a single room neonatal ICU)
• Facilities to accommodate undergraduate physician training
• MRI unit
UHNBC is also home to a cancer centre for Northern BC, featuring a wide range of cancer treatments including radiation therapy.

Qualfications
• Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
• Three (3) years' recent clinical/administrative experience in a specialized geriatric setting, including crisis intervention, conducting individual/family/group sessions and interacting in community-based programs, or; an accredited gerontology certificate and one year's recent related experience, or; an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Class 5 drivers' licence and own vehicle.

Skills and Abilities:
• Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client/family centred model of care, Elder Friendly and Gentle Care principles.
• Comprehensive knowledge of geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry and nursing standards of the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association.
• Broad knowledge of issues associated with ageing, chronic illness and psychosocial factors such as caregiver issues, family dynamics and communication patterns.
• Broad knowledge of the roles of both hospital and community geriatric services in client care and the ability to act as liaison between services.
• Comprehensive knowledge of assessment and treatment of health problems common to geriatric clients including depression, psychosis, delirium, dementia, and personality disorders.
• Comprehensive knowledge of theories and systems of family dynamics and end-of-life issues.
• Demonstrated skill in caring for geriatric clients and families including ability to conduct group sessions and deal effectively with crises and emergencies.
• Ability to work in a consultative/collaborative manner as a team member, leader and facilitator.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with clients, families, colleagues and other health care workers.
• Ability to independently organize workload, establish priorities, plan and coordinate client care, including the care provided by other agencies.
• Ability to effectively deal with conflict.
• Ability to operate a computerized patient information system.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to perform duties.
