WSP is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Mechanical Buildings team, located at our Victoria office.
WSP's mechanical engineering team in Victoria engages in diverse projects in the commercial, institutional, health care, educational and light industrial sectors in BC and the Yukon. Reporting to the mechanical and electrical manager, this position will be responsible for the preparation of mechanical designs and documentation, construction reviews and administration and project management.

A day in the life
- You'll be using your expertise to design mechanical systems for a wide variety of building and site types throughout BC and the Yukon.
- You will be working on the design of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings in the health care and institutional/commercial sectors, ensuring the mechanical design complies with the BC Building Code, the BC Plumbing Code, and other codes as required.
- You will be participating with a design team of mechanical engineers and technicians, focused on technical solutions, developing mechanical designs, taking responsibility for the preparation of project drawings and specifications and reviewing field work.
- You'll be communicating with clients, other design team partners, authorities and contractors.
Responsibilities
- Understanding and practicing safe work procedures.
- Reporting to the mechanical/electrical manager, working in a team environment.
- Working on a wide range of project assignments within the mechanical buildings field, including HVAC, plumbing and fire protection.
- Taking responsibility for project assignments from concept design to completion of construction.
- Preparing engineering reports and studies.
- Preparing load calculations utilizing industry standard heating/cooling load analysis software
- Selecting systems and equipment and preparing project specifications
- Preparing project drawings utilizing AutoCAD and Revit design platforms.
- Reviewing project construction progress and managing construction phase administrative tasks.
- Participation in the preparation of fee proposals and business development activities where requested.
- Project management and coordination of project delivery, including multidisciplinary projects.
- Reliably and promptly responding and attending to clients' needs.
- Communicating effectively with the design team, clients, design professionals, contractors and authorities having jurisdiction.
- Understanding and adhering to project budgets and timelines.
- Maintaining accurate and prompt project tracking, management and billing.
- Following established quality assurance and quality control processes.
- Providing guidance and mentorship to less experienced staff members.
Qualifications
- P.Eng. registration with EGBC or another Canadian provincial engineering association.
- 5+ years of experience in consulting mechanical design engineering for buildings.
- Having your PSPC Reliability clearance would be a huge asset!
- Ability to lead a design/project delivery team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to represent WSP in project meetings, client meetings.
- Ability to deliver comprehensive design submissions, often with demanding timelines.
- An extensive understanding of building construction and building mechanical systems and controls, the BC Building Code, the BC Plumbing Code and the National Building Code of Canada.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required. Proficiency with Carrier HAP or equivalent industry standard analysis software is required. Proficiency with AutoCAD and REVIT is considered an advantage.
