Under the direction of the Provincial Library Leader/Cancer Information Centre Process Leader, the Library Technician orders books and other library materials and catalogues and classifies library materials according to AACR2 standards, the National Library of Medicine and Library of Congress systems and assigns subject headings using MESH. The Library Technician provides reference and bibliography searches, assists with website maintenance and is also responsible for purchasing, timekeeping, maintaining filing and the compilation of monthly library statistics. The Library Technician provides work direction to library clerks and orientation for new library clerks as required.

What you'll do

  • Catalogue and classify library materials according to AACR2 standards, the National Library of Medicine and Library of Congress systems and assigns subject headings using MESH; submits catalogued items to Librarian for review and approval and makes appropriate changes as directed. Process and maintain on-line catalogue and updates relevant changes such as new items, changed records and/or deleted items.
  • Place specific purchase orders for library books, audiovisuals and supplies for BC Cancer Agency/PHSA departments and libraries by telephone, fax or electronic format; completes and enters purchase orders into the system, arranges for appropriate approvals and forwards to Leader. Receives ordered materials.
  • Match document such as invoices and packing slips to purchase orders; maintains files of invoices, purchase orders and receiving documents; contacts appropriate sources such as external suppliers and vendors by telephone and or correspondence regarding matters such as missing invoices and overdue orders.
  • Assign account codes such as cost centre codes to invoices, distributes invoices for approval and payment and liaises with Accounts Payable, Finance to ensure prompt payments are made. Reviews monthly VISA statements and matches amount to invoices and purchases.
  • Assist patients and other library users with information requests by performing reference and bibliographic searches by subject, keyword or journal articles and refers complex or detailed reference and research requests to Librarians.
  • Create and maintains serial records for periodicals management in DBTextworks; submits new serial records to Librarian for review and approval and makes appropriate changes as directed.

What you bring

Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by completion of a recognized two year Library Technician Program
  • Two years of recent related work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

You have:
  • Ability to type at 35 wpm.
  • Ability to perform alphanumeric filing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and all levels of staff, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

Wage: $30.54 per hour.
