Job Summary
The Team
The Justice, Health, and Revenue Group is an established team of around 140 professionals who conduct litigation and provide legal advice to various ministries of the government and certain public agencies. We appear on behalf of the province at all levels of court and carry out work as solicitors for a diverse range of ministries and public agencies including the areas of health, education, children and family, housing, justice services, tax, insolvency, plus regulatory areas including cannabis, vehicles, and gaming. Our diverse team mainly operates out of Victoria working closely together to navigate the fast-paced world of legal challenges. We value strong teamwork, open communication, and the chance to learn from a wide range of experiences, creating a supportive environment where you can thrive and grow in your career. The Role
As Legal Counsel, you will provide advice to the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction and Community Living British Columbia. Your focus will be on general solicitors' work, including drafting contracts and agreements, advising on statutory interpretation and administrative law, and supporting policy development and legislative amendments.Familiarity with relevant statutes adds value but is not required. The ideal candidate provides practical advice, analyzes legal issues effectively, and manages multiple priorities with collaboration and diplomacy.This position is perfect for someone who is passionate about making a difference through their legal expertise.

About this Position:
This is a 12 month temporary opportunity. This position may be extended or become permanent.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position is subject to membership in the Professional Employees Association.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Must be a member in good standing or immediately eligible (within 4 months) for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
- Legal Counsel Level 3: 11th year of call on.
- Experience in agreement drafting and interpretation.
- Experience in statutory interpretation.
- Experience building strong relationships with clients/partners and team members.
- Experience working independently and in teams.
- Experience managing files with competing priorities to meet deadlines.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- Current or recent experience providing legal advice to government, other public sector entities, or the private sector on contract, procurement and/or tendering law.
- Current or recent experience providing legal advice in connection with contract, procurement and/or tendering law in British Columbia.
