Job Summary

The Team
The Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) is an established team of just under 20 staff members, including fire training specialists, and program-focused professionals. This team collaborates closely with external partners such as local government, fire departments and fire-related associations to support fire safety across British Columbia. The team's work is vital in ensuring the safety and well-being of communities, and through collaboration, they are committed to making a positive impact throughout BC.

The Role
As a Fire Service Advisor, you are the "on the ground" representative of the OFC and will personally provide leadership, guidance, coordination, and expert advice on best practices on behalf of the OFC for the fire services in British Columbia. You will also be responsible for conducting fire inspections and fire investigations on behalf of local authorities, throughout BC, when appropriate. This position offers a great opportunity to support fire services in BC, foster a positive work environment, and share your valuable fire service experience while contributing to the important work of enhancing fire safety in British Columbia.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum eight (8) years' experience in any one or combination of the following: fire prevention/inspection/investigation; fire suppression operations; fire department staff training; emergency management planning and/or response, or business continuity. An equivalent combination of education, skills, training, and/or experience may be considered.
  • Experience facilitating and leading communication, consultation, and action among local government, provincial government, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with Microsoft suite of applications (Outlook Calendar, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, MS Teams).
  • Possess a valid unrestricted Class 5 BC Driver's License.

Preference may be given to candidates who have one (1) or more of the following:
  • Completion of NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 1 through a recognized fire training academy or Institute.
  • Completion of Fire Services Instructor 1.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in fire cause and origin investigations.
  • Five (5) or more years of in a compliance and enforcement environment conducting fire inspections.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience working with the British Columbia Structure Firefighter Minimum Training Standards.
  • Experience creating, interpreting, and/or applying provincial or federal legislation on a local level.
  • Completed Fire Cause & Origin Level 1, Level 2 and/or Level 3 training.
  • Experience at the ranks of Lieutenant and/or Captain in the fire service.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience within a senior Command Staff Team (i.e., Fire Chief; Deputy Fire Chief; Assistant Fire Chief; Fire Services Coordination / Protection Managers) within a recognized fire service provider (or similar rank in a similar organization, for example, the BC Wildfire Service).
  • Experience in a Training Officer role within a fire department.
  • Experience instructing as a representative of a recognized fire training academy in BC.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience as awildland firefighter.
  • Current or previous designation as a Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner (LAFC).

Candidates must be willing and able to:
  • Travel on a frequent basis by motor vehicle, aircraft, and/or boat.
  • Work evenings / weekends.
  • Work outside in all weather conditions, sometimes alone or with minimal support.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
