This approximate start date for this regular full-time position is January 2, 2025. Regular hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Travel between Douglas College's locations as required. Travel for business may be required on occasion.

The Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic and Provost, the Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration provides academic and strategic leadership to the Faculty and is responsible for planning, developing, promoting and evaluating the effectiveness of the Faculty's academic and continuing professional education programs. As a senior member of the Academic Division, the Dean works closely with the Vice President, Academic and Provost to further the initiatives in the College's Strategic Plan and with the Faculty to develop and implement initiatives in accordance with the Faculty's operational plans. The Dean plays an instrumental role in fostering a supportive environment for both faculty and staff to maintain the highest quality of service for students, encourage superior standards of course instruction and promote excellence in academic scholarship.

Responsibilities

Key Opportunities

    •Champion a student-focused culture across the Faculty and College, in alignment with the broader institutional mission, goals, values and strategic objectives
    •Promote the use of educational technology and blended learning to enhance pedagogical methods that support a diversity of learners
    •Foster a culture of academic integrity across the Faculty and College, in collaboration with faculty, students, administrators, and staff
    •Participate in the development of Douglas College decolonization initiatives that respond to the TRC Calls to Action and UNDRIP
    •Lead and promote equity, diversity and inclusion across the Faculty and College
    •Foster and grow existing and new opportunities and partnerships
    •Recognize and support the diversity of programming and disciplines within the Faculty and facilitate the development of innovative programs, research, and applied learning
    •Lead, partner and/or participate in Faculty and College-wide initiatives and committees

Leadership

    •Identify and lead the development of educational and research opportunities for the Faculty
    •Represent the Faculty and College and the Faculty and College's interests before government agencies, other institutions, and other organizations
    •Lead and promote equity, diversity and inclusion across the Faculty and College
Academic Programming, Research and Teaching

    •Support diversity and inclusion efforts and the creation of a culturally responsive learning environment
    •Use metrics and assess learning outcomes to further refine, develop and evolve Faculty programming
    •Oversee the ongoing review and updating of existing curriculum as well as the planning, development, and implementation of new curriculum
    •Ensure the quality and integrity of programs in the Faculty and the College's reputation in the related fields of study
    •Ensure new and continued accreditation of programs in the Faculty
Student Services, Experience & Recruitment

    •Recognize and address the diverse needs of students
    •Promote the use of educational technology and blended learning to enhance pedagogical methods that support a diversity of learners, including students with disabilities.
    •Support and participate in student recruitment, enrolment, and engagement opportunities, to attract and retain students
    •Facilitate initiatives in support of internationalization of our student body
Management and Administration

    •Develop, implement, and monitor Faculty operational plans in accordance with the development and execution of the College's Strategic Plan, Mission and Goals and governance requirements
    •Oversee Faculty budgeting, resource allocation, and financial management, consistent with College policies, procedures, and guidelines
    •Interpret and administer College policies and procedures, including contractual obligations, and collective agreements
    •Develop, review, and communicate Faculty procedures
Faculty and Staff Relations

    •Cultivate an environment of transparency, consultation, and collaboration as key values of the Faculty
    •Lead and manage a multi-union Faculty, including hiring, developing, evaluating, and disciplining employees as appropriate across two campuses
    •Oversee the provision of professional developmental activities for the Faculty
Internal and External Relations

    •Promote the Faculty within the College and with the broader local and international community
    •Communicate with stakeholders on behalf of the Faculty
    •Develop and maintain relationships appropriate to the College's strategy, operations, and strategic initiatives
    •Participate in relevant provincial, national, and international organizations
    •Represent the Faculty on various committees and institutional initiatives
    •Represent the Office of the Vice President, Academic and Provost, as required.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
Minimum Qualifications

    •Established professional credibility as usually evidenced by a graduate degree in a relevant field or discipline represented within the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration
    •Qualified to teach in at least one discipline relevant to the Faculty
    •A minimum of five years of experience in a mid-level administrative position in a unionized post-secondary institution or other relevant organization
    •Knowledge of the teaching environment as usually evidenced by having taught at a post-secondary level or equivalent combination of teaching and administrative experience
    •A track record in research would be an asset
    •Experience with online or blended learning strategies would be an asset.

    •Demonstrated commitment to student-centered post-secondary education
    •Demonstrated ability to lead the development and implementation of strategic and operational priorities
    •Demonstrated ability to lead within a complex academic environment
    •Demonstrated experience with current and evolving technology and its impact on teaching, learning and resources
    •Demonstrated experience leading and implementing programs and initiatives to support equity, diversity, and inclusion in the post-secondary setting
    •Demonstrated experience managing teams in a multi-disciplinary environment
    •Experience in student enrolment, recruitment, and retention strategies; Experience in the recruitment, development, and retention of dynamic team members
    •Demonstrated success in a broad range of administrative leadership and management
    •Experience managing human resources within a multi-union, public sector environment
