Job Summary

The Supreme Court of British Columbia has an opening in Vancouver for a Supreme Court Associate Judge to be appointed by Order in Council. Associate Judges have jurisdiction to hear chambers applications in interlocutory matters (such as amendment of pleadings, addition of parties, production of documents) interim family applications (such as custody, guardianship, parenting responsibilities and child and spousal support); and applications in proceedings by way of petition (such as foreclosures). Associate Judges preside at Trial Management Conferences, Case Planning Conferences and Judicial Case Conferences. Additionally, Associate Judges have the jurisdiction of a Registrar of the Court and deal with assessment or review of costs, reviews of legal fees under the Legal Profession Act, conduct inquiries referred by a Judge for recommendation of the Registrar for matters (such as permanent spousal or child support, balance owing under a mortgage or other security and conduct accountings in estate matters. Associate Judges also sit as registrars in Bankruptcy.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in law from a recognized Canadian university
  • Membership in good standing or eligibility to join the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Engaged in active legal practice for a period of at least 10 years
  • Experience in Supreme Court civil and family practice and procedure in British Columbia


Preference may be given to applicants who are fluent in French (oral and written).
