Job interview secrets can help you improve your chances of securing a job. In “Job interview secrets – part 1”, we covered a checklist for managing the process leading up to the actual interview. Here’s a checklist for what to do once the interview begins.

 

Job interview secrets – what to do after the interview starts

  1. Greet the interviewer and introduce yourself. Shake hands, if it’s appropriate.
  2. Nod to the receptionist and smile. Follow the interviewer, as directed.
  3. Match the interviewer’s conversation. If the interviewer makes small talk, follow along. If they leap into “shop talk”, stay on track.
  4. Pay attention to body language. Make eye contact, lean forward a little and try not to cross your arms. Try to smile and nod when appropriate, so that you convey your enthusiasm.
  5. When you’re asked if you have any questions, refer to your list. Ask one or two questions that have not been answered. If the interviewer is receptive, you might be able to ask more, but try not to tie them up if they seem impatient. (Ultram)
  6. At the close of the interview, tell them you’re interested in the position and thank the interviewer for meeting with you.
  7. Ask when they plan to make a decision.
  8. Shake hands, if appropriate, and say goodbye.
  9. Send a thank you letter.
  10. Follow up, depending on what the interviewer told you about their plans for making a decision. Make sure you’re not an annoying job seeker.
